Mary Blair, Cinderella, Cinderella at parents' grave concept painting
Works by Mary Blair, her husband Lee, and his brother Preston for Disney are among the highlights of Heritage Auctions' The Art of Disney sale next month.
Running August 7-11, the auction features original works by all three artists, including more than 70 Mary Blair lots. Among the highlights is a rare concept painting she created for an unused scene in Cinderella portraying the princess in mourning at her parents’ grave.
A major section of the auction is The Daniel Shak Platinum Collection which contains more than 50 lots of original Disney production art including hand-painted cels, concept art, and behind-the-scenes drawings from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast.
Highlights include:
two concept paintings by Swedish illustrator Gustaf Tenggren created for Snow White
a Cinderella hand-inked production cel setup signed by Walt Disney featuring a transformed Cinderella admiring her Fairy Godmother’s work
an original panoramic production background by Eyvind Earle from Sleeping Beauty

There are also items from Disney artist Andreas Deja's private collection including a hand-inked Belle Notte production cel from 1955’s Lady and the Tramp, original storyboards for Robin Hood and The Aristocats by Ken Anderson, and Anderson's original comparison lineup for Robin Hood featuring Prince John, King Richard, Maid Marian, Sheriff of Nottingham, Robin Hood and Little John.
Also going under the hammer is a selection of early-stage development and concept drawings for Peter Pan by artists Jack Miller and David Hall including a rare sheet of first-pass story drawings featuring Hook’s pirates, Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, plus a rare set of three character development drawings of Wendy, and a pair of storyboard drawings of Michael and Nana.
