A manuscript book containing A Copy of an Account of Rachel Wilson's Religious Visit

A unique collection of books relating to the Quaker movement in England and the U.S. has sold for £11,500 at Anderson & Garland.  

A manuscript book containing a transcription of Rachel Wilson’s account of her religious mission to America, prepared for her descendants by Deborah Braithwaite, went for £2,750. Wilson (1720–1775), a Quaker minister from Kendal, was known for her extensive religious travels in Britain and the United States.
 
Other highlights included:

  • two manuscript memoranda books from the Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, compiled by Joseph Pease in 1819 and 1829 respectively (sold for £2,500)
  • the manuscript diary of Jane Backhouse of Darlington, detailing her 1815 journey across England and Wales to visit relatives and fellow Friends, indicating the mobility and dedication of Quaker women in the early 19th century (£4,000)
  • a manuscript cookery book compiled by Mary Mounsey
  • a manuscript volume of extracts from the journal and correspondence of Thomas Richardson of West Hendon
  • a bound manuscript by Edward Backhouse of Ashburne House titled Sunderland and its Neighbourhood in the by-gone ages – from a period of 3000 years ago
  • two volumes of extracts from the diary and correspondence of Elizabeth Robson of Sunderland, compiled by her daughter Mary Edward Backhouse in 1852
  • three manuscript extracts from the journal of Anne Capper of Stoke Newington, copied by Katherine Backhouse of Ashburne in 1870
